Definition: Light painting is a technique that uses a light source, such as flashlight (with or without coloured gel) to selectively illuminate subjects while camera's shutter remains open. The camera is normally mounted on a sturdy tripod as the exposure times are quite long and can vary from 20 seconds to 40 minutes and more. Like an artist paints canvas with paintbrushes, a photographer paints the scene with the light sources of choice. Light painting is mostly done at night or in the low light conditions.
